August 6, 2015

The pricing of the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron, which will be the first hybrid electric vehicle offered in the United States by Audi, has been released. The range is set to begin from $37,900 with customers qualifying for federal and state tax incentives. The plug in hybrid is set to roll off the showroom floors in October 2015 with efficiency figures to be announced sometime in the future once available from the U.S regulators.

The $37,900 price tag will be for the premium package while the more upmarket Prestige package is set to cost $46,800. Both the vehicles will qualify for a federal tax credit of $4,168 while some states may offer additional incentives.

The A3 Sportback e-tron will feature a 1.4 Litre TFSI petrol engine assisted by a liquid cooled permanent magnet-driven electric motor. The engine will be mated to a six speed S tronic transmission with the engine producing 204 hp and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque.

An 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery provides backup and has been neatly tucked under the rear seats freeing up space in the trunk. A 240 Volt charging socket can fully charge the batteries in about 2 hours and 15 minutes while charging through a 120 Volt outlet can take up to 8 hours.

The vehicle will offer four driving modes that can be selected by the driver. The EV mode will operate only the electric motor offering a quiet ride and rapid acceleration. Hybrid mode allows the computer to select the most efficient source of power. Hold Battery mode will allow Hybrid driving while preserving a fully charged battery to extend range for use later while the Charge Battery mode will use the petrol engine to recharge the batteries while driving at highway speeds.

The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron will sport full LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, aluminium roof rails, 16 inch wheels as standard with an option of upgrading up to 18-inch wheels. The vehicle will offer a 13.6 cubic feet of cargo space and can seat 5 passengers. An e-tron specific shift knob and MMI wheel with an optional MMI touch will be offered along with a thin 7-inch screen.
