October 14, 2015

The BMW M2, M variant of the 2 Series Coupe, has been officially revealed. The M2 is the direct heir to the BMW 1 Series M Coupe and is expected to make its debut at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show in January.

The exterior looks sporty and alludes to the performance on tap. It gets a low front-end with large air intakes and the kidney grille with M logo on it. The flanks feature muscular wheel arches, M gills on the front fenders and 19-inch aluminium wheels with double-spoke design. The rear receives a boot-lid spoiler and M-twin exhausts on opposite ends, housed within the diffuser.

The interior gets the M treatment as well, with the M- sports steering wheel, gearshift lever and embossing on the sports seats. Premium Alcantara leather is used for the door pads while carbon fiber is found on the center console, adding a sporty touch to the cabin. Blue contrast stitching on select details further enhances appeal.

Under the hood of the M2 lies a 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol engine. This unit develops 370 hp at 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 465 Nm (343 lb.-ft.); the torque figure can be increased to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) in short bursts under overboost. The engine can be mated to a 6-speed manual or the optional 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. When equipped with the DCT gearbox and launch control activated, the M2 sprints from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.3 seconds. Top speed is restricted to 250 km/h (155 mph). Fuel consumption and carbon emission figures are rated 12.65 km/l (35.8 mpg) and 185 g/km respectively.

To optimize traction and directional stability the M2 is fitted with electronically controlled Active M Differential. Further, controlled drifts on the track are in the offing when Dynamic Stability Control system’s M Dynamic Mode (MDM) is activated.

The BMW M2 has been priced from €56,700 in Germany and will start reaching dealerships in April 2016. In the UK, the M2 is priced from £44,070 OTR and will start reaching dealerships in April 2016. Pricing for the U.S. is yet to be announced but sales will commence in Spring 2016.
