2016 Chevrolet Camaro performance details released

GM has released the performance details of the sixth generation Chevrolet Camaro range after its unveiling in May this year. The all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro features a weight saving of 390 lbs (177 kg) over its predecessor and the company claims that the all-new Camaro will deliver performance aimed at resetting the benchmark figure in the segment.

Chevrolet has paid considerable attention to the weight of the sixth generation of the Camaro with it featuring a lighter and stronger architecture. The company claims that it has invested more than 9 million hours in the development of a newer and lighter chassis. The computer-aided engineering has been instrumental for engineers in developing a new modular architectural strategy that has been individually tailored for every model in the line-up.

This has resulted in the kerb weight of the base 2016 Camaro to be 368 lbs (167 kg) lighter than before, while the 1SS variant features a weight loss of 223 lbs (101 kg) and an 29 hp that results in 14% improvement in the power to weight ratio.

The base model of the 2016 Camaro that comes equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that produces 275 hp (205 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. (400 Nm) of torque, and 6-speed manual transmission, is capable of reaching 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 5.4 seconds and completing a quarter mile dash in 14 seconds.

With the 3.6-litre naturally aspirated V6 engine that produces 335 hp and 284 lb.-ft. (385 Nm) of torque and Hydra-Matic 8L90 8-speed automatic transmission, the all-new model can reach 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in 5.1 seconds and complete a quarter mile run in 13.5 seconds.

The range-topping Camaro SS sports the Corvette Stingray’s 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine. The naturally aspirated engine puts out 455 hp and 455 lb.-ft. (617 Nm) of torque, and when paired to the 8-speed paddle shift gearbox, allows the new generation model to reach from 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.0 seconds and complete a quarter mile run in 12.3 seconds.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will go on sale in the U.S. market this Fall. 2016 Camaro 1LT has been priced at US$26,695, while the 2016 Camaro 1SS has been priced at US$37,295.
