Fiat has released two teasers of the 2016 Fiat 124 Spider on social media. Both images have been released with different captions over different social media handles of the company. The Italian automaker will stage the world debut of the 2016 Fiat 124 Spider at the 2015 LA Auto Show on 18 November in the morning.
The 2016 Fiat 124 Spider is a compact roadster sitting in a fourth generation Mazda MX-5’s shell. Fiat is expected to have made many changes with the Mazda MX-5 in terms of design and engineering, but the core layout and technical tidbits will more or less remain the same. In short, it will be typically European with many curves, unlike the aggressive and edgy Mazda MX-5. The styling of the classic 1966 Fiat 124 Spider will be interpreted on the remake.
The dimensions are likely to have only minor difference with those of the Mazda version, if there be any. The weight is said to remain under 1,000 kg. The original, Japanese version is offered with a 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines. The Fiat-badged model is also likely to be offered with a 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged petrol engine and a high performance Abarth variant will also be available.
The Abarth 124 Spider is said to be powered by a detuned version of the Alfa Romeo 4C’s 237-hp 1.75-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Fiat may employ the 1.4-litre T-Jet turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Abarth 595 Competizione with revised outputs as an option or the main engine.
