When asked about the status of the upcoming Fiat 124 Spider by alVolante.it, Olivier Francois, Head of Fiat brand and Chief Marketing Officer and a member of the Group Executive Council (GEC), replied that the new roadster is ready and will probably debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show that opens in the first week of March. Perhaps, it may be revealed before the motor show debut in Geneva, he added.
The 2016 Fiat 124 Spider will be based on the fourth generation Mazda MX-5. Its design is said to be a blend of retro and modern. The retro design cues should be borrowed from the 1966 Fiat 124 Sport Spider which had a 2+2 seat configuration. As the Mazda MX-5 is also offered with a small 1.5-litre petrol engine, the Fiat 124 Spider could also be offered with a similarly sized 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo petrol engine. It was reported in February that the new 124 Spider will weigh less than 1,000 kg.
The new Fiat 124 Spider will be built alongside the Mazda MX-5 at Mazda’s plant in Hiroshima, Japan as per the joint venture agreement between FCA Group and Mazda.
