The 2016 Mazda CX-9 has been spied testing in Los Angeles, California in the USA by Carspotter Jeroen. As seen in the spy video (embedded below), the prototype hints that the all-new model will feature the KODO design language. The redesigned full-size crossover is said to be waiting for its unveil at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show in November and go on sale in first markets for MY2016.
According to a report released in May, the all-new Mazda CX-9 will sport a new 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that will debut on the next-gen Mazdaspeed 3 at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) in September. This engine will churn out 220 kW (295 hp) on the high performance hatchback. Transmission options on next generation model are expected to include SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual and SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed Sport automatic.
In the U.S. market, the currently sold Mazda CX-9 features a 3.7-liter naturally aspirated V6 gasoline engine that develops 273 hp and 270 lb.-ft. (366 Nm) of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Two drivetrain configurations are available – front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
The all-new Mazda CX-9 will be followed by the second generation CX-5 later in 2016, as per the aforementioned report. The all-new CX-5 should go on sale as a MY2017.
