The Mazda CX-9 has finally been redesigned completely after nine years since the original model arrived. The second generation 2016 Mazda CX-9 has made its world premiere at the 2015 LA Auto Show and has become the brand’s latest model to catch-up with the latest edition of the ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design language.
Along with the curves and edges that mainly define the design, the proportions too have been given attention to detail. A long hood, dynamic greenhouse and short overhangs give a very atheletic appeal to the all-new CX-9. At 199.4 inches (5065mm) long, the 2016 Mazda CX-9 is 1.2 inch (30 mm) shorter than the outgoing model. However, Mazda has managed the stretch the wheelbase by 2.2 inches (55 mm) despite the smaller body.
Compared to the previous generation, the new generation Mazda CX-9 is around 198. lbs. (90 kg) lighter in front-wheel drive configuration and around 287 lbs. (130 kg) lighter in i-ACTIV AWD all-wheel drive configuration. Weight reduction has allowed Mazda engineers to take more mreasures for noise-cancellation. The window thickness has been increased to 4.8 mm and simpler, more rigid parts have been used to reduce noise. In total, 53 lbs. of sound-deadening mats have been added into the body for reduced NVH.
The interior is also completely new. The front passengers receive a warm welcome from their car with white LED accent lighting throughout their cabin space. The forward-angled dashboard is embellished with a single piece of aluminum, the three-spoke steering wheel is similar to the one seen on the brand’s other latest models and there’s ample use of leather and other premium materials throughout.
The instrument panel is also modern with a 4.6-inch full-colour TFT screen in the guages. There’s also an Active Driving Display, Mazda’s calling for a full colour head-up display which projects navigation, cruise control and other function’s readouts onto the lower windshield. The MAZDA CONNECT infotainment system comes with a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen display and a commander control knob. There’s a new 12-speaker Bose premium audio system for superior entertainment.
The 2016 CX-9 features a new 2.5-litre SKTACTIV-G 2.5T turbocharged inline four-cylinder petrol engine that throws out 227 hp (169 kW) on 87-octane petrol/250 hp (186 kW) on 93-octane petrol and 310 lb.-ft. (420 Nm) of torque. This is the first turbocharged engine in the SKYACTIV-G series and features Dynamic Pressure Turbo, the world’s first turbocharging system that can tweak the degree of exhaust pulsation as per the engine speed, as well as a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system through which the engine maintains the ideal air-fuel ratio over a wider output range. The engine is mated to the familiar 6-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission.
The three-row, seven-seat 2016 Mazda CX-9 will go on sale first in North America in Spring 2016. In the U.S. market, seven exterior colours will be offered, including Soul Red, Snowflake White Pearl, Sonic Silver, Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue and Titanium Flash, as well as the new Machine Gray.
