In a move to further transform perception about performance and practicality of all-electric vehicles Nissan has announced the 2016 Nissan Leaf in the UK with a larger 30 kWh battery pack. The addition of the new battery enables the vehicle to travel a distance of about 155 miles (249 km) and is aimed to broaden the appeal of the all-electric Leaf to a wider customer base.
The new battery pack has the same dimensions as the previous 24 kWh unit but features increased backup using new internal design and chemistry. The electrodes of the battery gain Nitrogen, Carbon and Magnesium for enhanced performance and reliability. The new battery pack features an increase in weight by 21 kg when compared to the standard 24 kWh battery.
Nissan claims that the new battery can be charged through a network of rapid chargers (3 phase, 400V) which are expanding throughout Europe. Customers can also charge the vehicle from the convenience of their homes or from public chargers. The new battery pack will be offered with a 8-year, 1,00,000 mile warranty.
The new 30 kWh battery pack is available in the mid-level Acenta trim and the range topping Tekna trim levels. The 24 kWh battery pack previously offered will be continue on the all the three trim levels.
The 2016 Nissan Leaf will replace the Carwings setup with the new NissanConnect EV system that has a simplified start-up process and a revamped design. This system enables owners to check the vehicle’s charge levels remotely through their smartphone, and also pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin without using battery energy.
The new NissanConnect EV system features seamless integration into the new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and now displays a new charging map showing charging stations along the route. It also sports revised navigation, digital radio, car-finder facility and maintenance alerts. The 2016 Nissan Leaf adds a new exterior paint scheme – Bronze -along with a new roof mounted antenna.
