The 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera (facelift) has been officially revealed. Apart from styling revisions, the 2016 911 Carrera gets new engines, dynamic chassis management along with addition of new technologies.
The exteriors of the sports car largely remain the same, easily distinguished as a Porsche. A mild facelift has been applied, with the incorporation of new head lamps with integrated four-point dynamic daytime running lamps. It also adds new design door handles without recess covers, reworked engine cover with vertical louvers and new tail lamps with four-point brake light motif.
The interior will feature liberal use of leather with sport seats and the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system that includes online satellite navigation and voice control integration. The PCM system features a 7-inch display and also will feature the integration of Google Earth, Google Streetview and Apple CarPlay for the first time. The cabin will integrate a smartphone tray in the centre armrest with the option of charging with an enhanced signal reception.
The optional Sport Chrono Package will add features like a new steering wheel with a ‘mode’ switch for selecting driving modes like ‘Normal’ ‘Sport’ ‘Sport Plus’ and ‘Individual’. The models equipped with the PDK transmission will also get an additional ‘Sport Response Button’ that will prime the drivetrain for maximum acceleration for 20 seconds.
Other features include the addition of the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and multi-collision braking system as standard. It also features the addition of optional automatic speed control system, adaptive cruise control system with coasting function and lane change assist system.
The 2016 911 Carrera and the Carrera S models will be powered by a new generation 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six engine with an increased output of 20 hp and 60 Nm over the previous iteration. It now produces 370 hp of power and 450 Nm of torque in the Carrera and 420 hp of power and 500 Nm of torque in the Carrera S. The Carrera S equipped with the Sport Chrono Package and PDK transmission can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds (0.2 seconds faster than before) and go on to achieve a top speed of 308 km/h (191 mph).
The 911 Carrera S model will also get the option of rear-axle steering for the first time and coupled with the new turbocharged flat-six engine is capable of lapping the North loop of the iconic Nurburgring circuit 10 seconds quicker than the previous version, with a time of 7 minutes and 30 seconds.
Porsche informs that despite the increase in performance figures, the models feature a 12 percent improvement in fuel efficiency. The 911 Carrera with the PDK transmission returns 38.2 mpg (13.5 km/l) which is an increase of 3.8 mpg (1.3 km/l), while the similarly specified 911 Carrera S delivers 36.7 mpg (12.9 km/l) which is an increase of 4.2 mpg (1.4 km/l).
