2015 IAA-bound 2016 Smart ForTwo Cabrio revealed

Smart will introduce the all-new Smart Fortwo Cabrio at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) next month. The company will begin accepting orders from in first market(s) mid-November, with the new cabrio expected to reach dealerships in February 2016.

The all-new Fortwo cabrio will be based on the coupe version and aims to display the company’s philosophy of being a functional design defined by two poles – the heart and mind. It will feature a ‘tritop’ fabric sliding roof, which automatically slides down in 12 seconds at the touch of a button. The company claims the roof can be operated while driving, even at top-speed.

Additionally the side roof bars can also be removed to deliver an enhanced open-top experience. The owners can also operate the automatic roof outside the car via a 3-button remote. The fabric roof will be offered in three colour options – blue denim (jeans look), black and red. The headliner for all colour options will be in grey, while the removable side roof bars will be feature a ‘tridion’ colour scheme.

The exterior is encapsulated in the ‘tridion’ safety cell, featuring a progressive and purist design language. The cabrio gets the familiar silhouette with clear lines and short overhangs. It will feature a B-pillar which is narrower than the coupe version. Safety features include the latest-generation ESP along with Hill-Start Assist and Crosswind Assist as standard. Optional safety features like Lane Keeping Assist and Forward Collision Warning can be specified.

The Smart Fortwo will be offered with two engine options- a 1.0-litre three cylinder engine producing 71 hp (52 kW) and a 0.9-litre three-cylinder engine producing 90 hp (66 kW). Transmission options include a 5-speed manual transmission and a ‘twinamic’ dual clutch transmission.
