The fourth generation 2016 Toyota Prius has been officially unveiled at a special event in Las Vegas in Nevada, USA. The all-new Prius [North American-spec] is 60 mm longer and 15 mm wider, but 20 mm shorter. Based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the new generation model is completely redesigned for A more appealing appearance and enhanced aerodynamics, performance, handling and efficiency.
The design of the fourth generation Prius is line with Toyota’s concept of “Iconic Human-tech,” and thus the flowing curves blend with sharply cut edges. The striking new headlamps minimise the sedan’s frontal area and provide a more aggressive character. The upper grille is no more split and covers more width of the front fascia, while the redesigned lower grille is shorter and appears to have been widened too. The engine hood has been redesigned to become more curvacious and sits lower for more style.
The subtle side profile maintains elegance of the Prius. Bold character lines run from the front fenders and sweep up as they near the end towards the rear fenders. The upper crease that starts from the rear doors gradually turns into the rear spoiler. The roof peak has been moved forward, with inspiration from the Mirai FCV.
Like the side profile, the rear fascia also has borrowed cues from the Mirai FCV. The LED combination tail lamps flow from top to bottom, from the rear spoiler to the trailing the edges of the sides. The tailgate and bumper have also been completely redesigned. The interior is also completely new. It’s modern in terms of technology, but basic in terms of visual appeal.
Toyota hasn’t released the full technical specifications just yet, but suggests that the all-new Prius will be lighter. The 2016 model will be offered with the new Toyota Safety Sense package which includes (depending on trim level and market) Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The safety package on the Euro-spec model exclusively includes Road Sign Assist.
The 2016 Toyota Prius will go on sale first in Japan, at the end of this year. U.S. and Australia will get the fourth gen model in early 2016. It will have its motor-show debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) this month.
