Vauxhall has officially revealed the 2016 Astra Tourer and announced that it will make its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) next week. The new Astra Sports Tourer aims to carry it forward the company’s design philosophy of ‘Sculptural Artistry meets Technical Precision’ to the next level.
The 2016 Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer is based on the all-new light weight architecture of the company also seen on the five-door hatchback. It features the same external dimensions of the previous version, but adds enhanced interior room for passengers and luggage. It features an increase in headroom of 26 mm in the front while the rear registers an increase of 28 mm. The company has also improved the interior packaging to achieve a total cargo capacity of 1,630 liters which is an improvement of 80 liters from the previous version.
The new Sports Tourer is up to 200 kg lighter than the previous version depending upon the trim level. The reduction in weight was achieved through every component being checked for compactness and use of light weight materials along with the new vehicle architecture employed by the company.
The weight of the body shell has been reduced by 20% from 357 kg to 280 kg; while the use of high-strength and ultra-high-strength low-weight steels, tweaked front and rear axles and compact sub-frames have further reduced the weight by 50 kg.
Speaking of external styling, the Astra Sports Tourer carries forward the design seen on the new Astra five-door hatchback. It sports a robust and safe stance while attracting attention with the slightly sloping roofline. It exudes a longer appearance which is further enhanced by the divided C-pillar. The rear has been designed to combine efficient design with practicality and features muscular wheel arches and an improved tail lamp design.
The 2016 Astra Sports Tourer features the new IntelliLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration technology. It will also add OnStar connectivity technology which is now available across Europe. It adds features like emergency response notification, high-speed 4G LTE internet connectivity and stolen vehicle recovery alert.
The cabin features 40/20/40 foldable rear seats allowing flexible space configurations. The car can also be optioned with the FlexOrganiser product range which includes dividing nets, side rails along with various luggage securing options.
One of the key features of the Sports Tourer is the ability to open and close the tailgate with a ‘kick’ motion under the rear bumper. The tailgate can also be opened normally with the use of the remote control or a switch mounted near the driver.
The 2016 Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer will be powered by petrol and diesel engines producing power ranging from 100 PS (98 hp) to 200 PS (197 hp). The 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show will also mark the debut of the 1.6-litre ECOTEC petrol engine producing 200 PS (197 hp) in the Astra Sports Tourer line-up.
