A report from Auto Express reveals several new details about the next-gen Audi A8 which is due in 2017. The all-new luxury saloon will boast a new design language, inspired from the Audi Prologue concept unveiled at last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. It will be the brand’s first car featuring autonomous driving which will be supported by long-range radar sensors, 12 ultrasonic sensors, laser scanners and high-resolution video cameras. The car will be capable of driving through traffic jams all by itself, up to speeds of 37 mph (60 km/h).
The MLB-platform based 2017 Audi A8 could be over 200 kg lighter than the current one and the engine lineup should include revised V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines.
Speaking to the publication, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management at Audi AG for Technical Development confirmed that the A8’s engines will offer electric turbocharging. A plug-in hybrid version will be launched for sure, either alongside the standard version or a little later. This would be under the company’s plan of offering a plug-in hybrid version of every model in its product line-up.
There will lot of new technologies introduced on the 2017 A8, as the company, as per the report, believes that up to 90% of all innovation in the automotive sector will be contributed by electronics. Having launched Matrix LED lighting technology in 2013, the company is now working on OLED lighting technology for the next-gen Audis. OLED displays featuring gesture control are currently under development and maybe introduced on the next-gen flagship saloon.
