The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider has been unveiled at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show and will go on sale in US by Summer 2016. The fourth generation Mazda MX-5-based compact sports car will come in two trims – Classica and Lusso.
The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider pays homage to the original 124 Spider that was introduced almost 50 years back. The modern interpretation of the 124 gets a low-slung body, balanced proportions and a fine mix of curves and creases. The front fascia features an upright stance and is divided in two units, the upper portion gets the hexagonal grille while the lower section houses the radiator grille. The rounded headlamps have been adorned with egg-shaped LED DRLs that lend them a nice touch. Power domes are seen on the hood adding some muscle to the exterior. The rear is equipped with a subtle boot lid spoiler, rectangular tail lights and twin circular tailpipes.
The interior is basically lifted from the Mazda MX-5 and has been designed around the occupants. The cabin is given a premium appeal with the use of soft-touch materials. Fiat says that the emphasis is on the driving experience and driver ergonomics, which is why the steering wheel, pedals and shifter have been positioned to facilitate easier operability.
The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider comes with features such as Fiat Connect 7.0 infotainment system with 7-inch touchscreen display, multimedia control, Bluetooth connectivity, heated seats and keyless entry. Safety is taken care of by technologies like adaptive front headlamps, Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection and ParkView rear backup camera. The body itself is made from high-strength materials that dissipate energy in the event of a collision, leading to better occupant safety.
Powering the 2017 124 Spider, is a 1.4-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine pumping out 160 hp and 184 lb.-ft. (249 Nm) of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
There are six exterior colours to choose from – Rosso Passione (Red Clear Coat), Bianco Gelato (White Clear Coat), Nero Cinema (Jet Black Metallic), Grigio Argento (Gray Metallic), Grigio Moda (Dark Gray Metallic) and Bronzo Magnetico (Bronze Metallic).
