The current Lexus CT was introduced in 2010, went on sale in Japan in 2011, and is said to enter second generation in 2017. While we have already seen how the redesigned model could structurally look like in these spy shots of an early test mule, a sketch released by CarSensor previews a different design. The sketch hints at a more crossover like high-riding stance and large body, and a side profile reminiscent of the NX.
As much as any Lexus enthusiast would love to see this design on the future CT, it’s probably going to remain only an artist’s impression. The large crossover body means excess bulk, and that simply doesn’t go with the core idea of the CT – efficiency. Moreover, such a model would clash with NX. Taking these into consideration, the CT will likely remain a compact hatchback in its next generation too.
The 2017 Lexus CT should be based on the ‘Toyota New Global Architecture,’ just like the fourth generation Toyota Prius. The Japanese publication claims that the wheelbase will be increased from 2,600 mm to 2,700 mm in the second generation. The dimensions, as per the report, would be set at 4350 × 1780 × 1500 mm, (LxWxH), and for better differentiation, could come with a 2-liter four-cylinder engine.
The current CT shares its core hardware with the Prius, and it’s very likely that next-gen model will have a lot of synergy with the hybrid powertrains of the next-gen Toyota Prius that will be revealed later this year.
