Sports car brand Alpine will come back to the market after over two decades in 2016, with the Alpine AS1 (Alpine Sport 1) as the first vehicle, according a report by AutoExpress. This was revealed by Bruno Ancelin, Senior Vice President of Renault, who confirms that the first offering from the brand will be a light weight and sporty car. Renault is planning a whole family of Alpine models which could also include SUV(s), suggests the report.
The brand is not going to offer a cheap alternative to premium rivals; Ancelin wants to position the sports car as a rival to Audi and Porsche, says the report. To make the sportscar a premium offering, Alpine is considering all possible options including assistance from alliance members Nissan and Daimler, adds the report.
Ancelin says that Alpine wants to have sustainability which cannot be achieved by a single model; the company is likely to offer alternative powertrain choices like a plug-in hybrid, and is considering other body styles including SUV, according to the report. Th technology, which kind of engines and which kind of bodystyles would be offered are under discussion he said.
