The McLaren P1 was the first McLaren to be powered by a hybrid powertrain, and it wasn’t a one-off as the company plans a slew of such hybrid cars for the future.
Sitting down with Auto Express at the company’s annual financial results announcement, McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt, said that he wants at least 50% of model range to be hybridized in less than ten years. Mr. Flewitt wants to plonk the technology currently employed only in the P1 and P1 GTR, under more models.
Mr. Flewitt thinks that half of the company’s line-up could be hybrid in less 10 ten years’ time.
The two major criteria for the company to give a green signal to a hybrid sports car are cost and weight. If these two areas are covered, then the company will press on with the bullish strategy of going hybrid. The CEO confirmed though, that the immediate next McLaren won’t be a hybrid.
