Audi has given the A8 L Security armoured saloon an upgrade, and will be showcasing the latest iteration of the ‘most secure Audi ever’ at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA). The A8 L Security has been designed to comply with VR 9 ballistic protection standards, which is the most stringent requirement for civilian security.
The 2016 Audi A8 L Security will incorporate the use of high resistant materials like special aluminum alloys, hot-formed steel armour and aramide fabric which have been specially designed to offer enhanced protection while keeping the weight low. Audi engineers have also specially developed the vehicle’a glazing for an added level of security.
The company informs that the vehicle is tested for resistance to explosive charges complying with the ERV 2010 guideline. All these improvements have resulted in the vehicle being upgraded to meet the requirements of the VR 9 resistance class, when compared to the previous model which adhered to the requirements of VR 7 resistance class.
Standard security features include an intercom, selective door unlocking and an armoured communication box located in the luggage compartment. Additionally, customers can also opt for the patented emergency exit system, emergency fresh air system and fire extinguishing system. Audi will also take individual requests for added personalisation from customers while offering comfort features like relaxation seats at the rear, among others as standard.
The high security full-size luxury saloon has a payload capacity of 600 kg (1,322 lbs) and is the only contender in its class with an all-wheel drive setup offered directly by the manufacturer. It will be offered with a choice of two engines – a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 TFSI that produces 435 hp (320 kW) of power and 600 Nm of torque and a naturally aspirated W12 FSI engine that produces 500 hp (368 kW) of power and 625 Nm of torque. The top speed has been limited to 210 km/h (130 mph) taking into consideration the stress on the run-flat tyres.
Audi has already commenced taking orders for the 2016 A8 L Security and the deliveries are expected to begin in Spring 2016.
