Speaking to IAB at the Volkswagen Group Night this month, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at Audi AG, confirmed that the Audi’s upcoming new crossover that was to be named the ‘Audi Q1’ will be named ‘Audi Q2’.
Although that doesn’t mean a crossover named ‘Audi Q1’ isn’t planned. Speaking to Autocar India, Dr. Hackenberg has confirmed that following the Audi Q2 next year, there will be an Audi Q1 as well. “The production version (upcoming crossover) will be called the Q2 and the Q1 will come later,” he said. This hints that the company maybe having a sub-compact crossover in the cards.
Strengthening the speculation that the Audi Q1 would be a sub-compact crossover, Dr. Hackenberg said that the Audi Q1 could be “less than four metres long”. This means that it could be the crossover equivalent of the Audi A1 hatchback. The German automaker’s smallest hatchback is due to enter second generation in 2018 or 2019, following which, we may see the Q1 entering the market.
Along with Audi, the Volkswagen Group is reportedly planning sub-compact crossovers for Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat too, all of which are slated to arrive before the end of the decade.
