A four member team of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has embarked on a 4,000 mile trip across Europe in the Think City Electric Vehicle (EV). The drive has been termed the BBC Electric Ride.
Think, which is a Norwegian electric car manufacturer, has provided the BBC with a brand new Think City EV for the BBC electric ride.
The four member team of the BBC consists of BBC Senior Producer Kevin Dawson, BBC Presenter Peter Curran; who is the team leader and the lead driver, and two more people from the BBC. The team will first drive to Harwich, from where they will be catching a ferry to Denmark, before driving through the Danish islands to Norway, Sweden, Austria, Germany,Lichtenstein, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and then finally back to the city of London in early July.
Kevin Dawson commented -
We want to look at the emergence of electric cars as a dawning reality. We’ll be investigating the technology, infrastructure and political will behind the growth of EV culture
Richard Canny, Think CEO -
This is exactly the pioneering spirit that we encourage at THINK, which is why we are so happy to be supporting the BBC in this excellent project. They will prove that an EV can be just as versatile as a conventional car, but at the same time much more cost effective, efficient and friendly to the environment
People from Think have provided the four member team with electric car driving tips for helping them drive along the way in a manner which utilises the capabilities of the vehicle to the fullest and exploits the maximum juice out of the car’s batteries . The car was handed over to team leader Peter Curran in London, before the start of their epic journey.
Some of the electric car driving tips communicated to the team are -
* The throttle of the car should be used wisely and the efficiency meter on the instrument should be referred to for the optimum driving style.
* Use the ‘E’ or economy mode of the transmission to increase the efficiency of the regenerative braking system and thereby increase the range of the car.
* Drive with the windows up to minimize the drag on the car and improve the efficiency of the car.
* Carry only what’s required for a trip within the car. Throw all the unnecessary stuff out.
