The Bentley Bentayga has been officially revealed ahead of its world debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) on September 15. Evolved from the Bentley EXP 9 F concept, the Bentayga borrows design and styling from the Continental GT.
Up front, the four all-LED headlamps, radiator grille, air intakes, lower grille and the hood bear significant resemblance to the Continental GT, and so do the chrome-surrounded parallelogram tail lamps featuring ‘B’-shaped graphics, bumper and the oval exhaust tips at the rear.
The side profile appears to be very athletic due to the large fenders and alloy wheels (22-, 21- or 20-inch) and mainly because of the haunch that starts from the rear doors and follows to the rear quarter panels in a muscular fashion. There’s again some inspiration from the aforementioned grand tourer; a chrome strip starts from bottom of the front door and follows to the rear.
The cabin sees usage of handcrafted wood and leather throughout. Bentley will offer all modern features like a head-up display, 8-inch touch screen infotainment system with a 60GB hard drive and a choice of up to 30 languages, 22-way adjustable front seats with six-programme massage system, heating and ventilation, 18-way adjustable individual rear seats with massage and ventilation functions as well as footrests, a full-length panoramic sunroof and more.
Bentley will offer three sound system options for the Bentayga: Bentley Standard Audio, Bentley Signature Audio and Naim for Bentley Premium Audio. The top-end, 1,950 watt Naim for Bentley Premium Audio system comes with 18-speakers and super-tweeters for offering studio-quality audio. Rear seat passengers can spend quality time on the go with the new Bentley Entertainment Tablet – a removable 10.2-inch Android-based tablet computer that features 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth for seamless high-speed connectivity.
Noteworthy safety and assistance technologies include Electronic Night Vision, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), multi-mode Traction Control (TCS), Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Park Assist.
Power the heart and soul of the Gaydon-based automaker’s first production crossover, is a 6-litre TSI twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine that churns out 608 PS (600 bhp/447 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lf.-ft.) of torque. The Crewe-built all-new twelve-cylinder engine is linked to a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission.
The Bentley Bentayga can reach 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 4 seconds flat and 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, and hit a top speed of 187 mph (301 km/h). However, the acceleration time and top speed figures are provisional and may change prior to market launch. Fuel economy (combined) in EU and EPA cycle is rated 22.1 UK mpg (7.81 km/l) and 16 US mpg (6.80 km/l) respectively. The CO2 emissions in EU cycle is rated 292 g/km.
Bentley has done its homework seriously to give the luxury crossover the must-have go-anywhere driving ability. It has tested the vehicle on almost every rough terrain out there, from the dirt and gravel of South Africa and the sand hills of Dubai, to the muddy fields of Cheshire in the UK, and from the 50°C desert heat to the -30°C freezing cold of the North Cape in Norway.
The Bentley Bentayga premieres the new Bentley Dynamic Ride feature, the world’s first electric active roll control technology that makes use of a 48V system. This system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering. It ensures that the tyres stick to the road to deliver utmost cabin stability, ride comfort and unmatched handling. To ensure a decent off-road capability, the company will offer Torsen centre differential and open rear differential in the crossover.
The new British luxury brand’s first production crossover comes with Electric Power-Assisted Steering that offers light and zippy handling at low speeds for urban driving and stiff and subdued response at high speeds for highway driving. Multi-mode air suspension is standard and the driver can choose from four different driving modes: High 2, High 1, Normal and Low.
Deliveries of the Bentley Bentayga will commence in early 2016. More details are available in the press release embedded at the bottom of the story.
