Citing the words of Rolf Frech, Engineering Chief and Board Member for Engineering at the company, a new report from Autocar suggests that Bentley is working on a new rear-wheel drive sportscar and will launch it in 2016. The company’s customers expected the GT3-R that was launched last year, to be a rear-wheel drive sports car, which it wasn’t.
According to the report, the new sports car will spawn the current Continental GT and will be far more extreme than the GT3-R. Under the hood, there will be an uprated version of the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine which is used by both the GT and GT3-R. The engine will produce more than 572 bhp, albeit the core focus in terms of engineering will be on weight reduction as the company aims to make this its first sub-2,000 kg current-generation car.
There’s no official word on the production number or the price just yet, but the report estimates that less than 300 units will be built, each with a price tag of around £300,000.
