Alongside the 2015 LA Auto Show, BMW has strategically unveiled the BMW Concept Compact Sedan at Auto Guangzhou 2015 in China which has a big potential for such compact German cars. The BMW Concept Compact Sedan previews the 2017 BMW 1 Series Sedan – the first-ever sedan version of BMW 1 Series. The Audi A3 rival should also spawn the third generation 2017 BMW 1 Series hatchback.
Up front, the concept begins with the signature kidney grille flanked by hexagonal, dynamically “sawn-off” twin circular LED headlights, V-shaped central air intake and big air scoops. The design of the front fascia has sort of an evil grin and is true to the brand’s Efficient Dynamics philosophy.
Short overhangs, weather strip-style door mirrors, flared wheel arches housing 20-inch bi-colour, light-alloy wheels with double-spoke design, large greenhouse and door panels with sweeping character lines and chrome window surrounds give unmatched athleticism to the side profile.
At the rear again, there’s lot of use of curves and creases throughout. The aggressive tail lamps have a slim design and are elongated at both ends – towards the quarter panels on the outside and towards the boot lid on the inside. Given its segment and targeted-price bracket, full LED tail lights would be out of question, but there is an L-shaped LED strip to give the sporty character.
The interior is the place where the BMW Concept Compact Sedan shows its true sportiness and exclusivity. The digital instrument panel on the front passenger side extends into the doors. Exclusive Nappa leather, open-pored wood and brushed aluminium are used for the instrument panel. The front door extends into the B-pillar to make the interior look big. The functions on the steering wheel, centre stack and centre console as well as the door openers are operated using backlit touch-sensitive, high-gloss black surfaces. A “combiner” Head-Up Display and an 8.8-inch display for the infotainment system are among the other technological highlights of the concept.
The concept is a four seater, with two individual seats in the front and rear. The sporty seats are inspired by racing buckets and covered in Nappa leather in warm Ivory and Grey Brown as well as Muted Brown, with Velocity Tulip (a shade of orange) accents. A large panoramic roof is present at the top and extends a long way back.
The Liquid Metal Bronze-finished BMW Concept Compact Sedan should spawn the 2017 BMW 1 Series Sedan by around the end of 2016 or in early 2017 at the latest.
