BMW is gearing up to add a high performance M variant ‘M40i’ to the BMW X4 range, says a new report from Autocar UK. The company plans to unveil the X4 M40i at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2016, and commence UK sales in the first quarter of the same year.
According to the report, the new range-topping variant will sport a more powerful version of the N55 engine. The bumped-up 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is internally codenamed ‘BMW S55’. It is the same engine that is also said to be plonked on the upcoming M2.
Details are sketchy but rumour is that the engine will have a revised induction system to churn out power of around 350 bhp. The engine should come matched to a tweaked ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission, with steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles and the familiar xDrive 4WD system with electronic torque vectoring. The top speed should typically be limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). The performance variant will go head on with the Audi RS Q3 and the Porsche Macan Turbo.
