Bus takes Green route with a rooftop garden!

Green rooftop Bus Roots

There are more than 4500 MTA intercity buses in New York and this has kindled a young Student and Artist, Marco Antonio Castro Cosio to conceptualize the ‘Bus Roots’ project, which is an effort to study the possibilities of setting up a rooftop garden on a large number of buses in the city.

‘Bio Bus’, his first prototype is basically a science lab on wheels. This mobile lab would visit schools and spread awareness about the environment. The ‘Bus Roots’ roof installed on this bus is over 15 sq foot in area and weighs around 225 pounds. The ‘Bio Bus’ is plated with Sedum, a small flowering plant on the roof.

I know that installing Bus Roots all at once on MTA’s fleet will not be easy, but perhaps Bus Roots can can start growing organically, one bus at a time.

According to Marco, if the ‘Bus Roots’ roof is installed on the whole fleet of MTA buses, it could create more than 35 acres of green space in the city and would help in better climate conditioning  and reduction in O2 levels. The picture you can see below is the Sedum plant on the roof of the ‘Bio Bus’.

We hope this idea clicks on a large scale and this would definitely be a alternative way to ‘Go Green’.
