The BMW M4 GTS has been officially confirmed for Canadian launch. 700 units are going to be sold worldwide and Canada will get 50 of them. The special edition will reach showrooms by Spring 2016 and its pricing and final specifications will be revealed closer to the launch date.
The M4 GTS furthers enhances the performance of the already potent M4 Coupe. It is the first production car in the world to come with a water injection system and Organic LED (OLED) tail lights. The limited edition sports car has clocked a lap time of 7 minutes 28 seconds around the famous Nurburgring- Nordschliefe track.
At the heart of the M4 GTS is a 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine that produces 493 hp and 442 lb.-ft. (600 Nm) of torque. These figures represent an increase of 16% and 10% over the maximum power and peak torque of the standard M4. Power is relayed to the wheels through the 7-speed M double-clutch transmission, helping the GTS hit 100 km/h from standstill in 3.7 seconds and a governed top speed of 189.5 mph (305 km/h). BMW says that despite the increase in power, fuel efficiency is the same as the M4 Coupe.
The water injection system fitted in the M4 GTS does the job of absorbing heat from the surrounding air when it changes phases. This is done by injecting water as a fine spray in the intake manifold plenum chamber where it evaporates (phase change), thus significantly lowering the temperature of the intake air. This reduces the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber, minimizing the risk of knock and allowing the turbocharged engine to operate with higher boost pressure and advanced spark timing, meaning more power.
