Mitsubishi has already made it clear that it has no plans to bring a replacement for the high-performance Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution which is commonly known as the Evo. Interestingly, the ‘Evo’ badge is set to return on an eco-friendly vehicle rather than a sports sedan. A new report from Autocar claims that the upcoming, second generation ASX range will include a electrified high-performance model that will be called the ASX Evo.
Tetsuro Aikawa, President and CEO of the company, says that in Japanese, ‘Oh’ pronounced in the word Evo means ‘king’, and the company would like to launch such a car with EV and PHEV technology, with ‘EV’ standing for electric vehicle and ‘O’ standing for king. However, he suggests Evo fans to not hold their excitement as such a vehicle is not coming anytime soon, because the company will need to sell a lot of the base models to develop these kind of vehicles in order to cover such vehicles’ R&D costs.
The company may eventually offer Evo models of several mainstream vehicles in the future. Offering high-performance model of mainstream cars has become a common tradition these days with the Japanese, German, American and other global automakers and Mitsubishi may formalize ‘Evo’ as its range-topping, high-performance line-up in the future. The Lancer Evolution is all set to reach the end of its journey, with the last, Lancer Evolution Final Edition which has already been announced in Japan and will be announced overseas soon.
