Citing an unnamed Mitsubishi official, a fresh report from Automotive News Europe says that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Mitsubishi Motors are nearing the finalization of their deal for pickup trucks in which the former will source the latter’s new L200 pickup and rebadge it as their own. The pickup, now in its fifth generation, was revealed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show
Speaking to the publication, the pickup program’s global lead Koichi Namiki said that the upside for Fiat about the deal is that the mechanicals of the Fiat-badged pickup will be identical to that of the original L200, but will vary in terms of design and other areas that matter to customers, and the changes are being worked-out currently. An undisclosed Fiat spokesman said to the publication that this deal should be finalized before the end of this month.
Like the original L200, the Fiat version will also be built and imported from the Japanese automaker’s plant in Laem Chabang, Thailand. It is expected to go on sale next year under FCA’s Fiat Professional light commercial vehicle brand in European and Latin American markets.
