The upcoming Fiat 124 Spider has been spied testing in Italy, courtesy of Blog di Motori. Based on the fourth generation Mazda MX-5, the 124 Spider would be Fiat’s fist offering in the compact roadster segment in the recent years.
The design & styling, unlike the Mazda MX-5, is likely to be a blend of retro and modern. The new roadster will mark revival of the 1966 Fiat 124 Sport Spider and would have some cues borrowed from the same. The original version had a 2+2 seating configuration but the new one would possibly be 2 seater.
The new 124 Spider will weigh under 1,000 kg, as per an earlier report. The Mazda MX-5 which forms basis for the Fiat’s new roadster, is offered with a small 1.5-litre petrol engine. And so, a possibility is that Fiat will offer its iteration with a comparable 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo petrol engine that also powers the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.
A more powerful Abarth variant has also been confirmed. The Abarth 124 Spider is speculated majorly to be offered with a detuned version of the Alfa Romeo 4C’s 237-hp 1.75 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, a 180-hp 1.4-litre T-Jet turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Abarth 595 Competizione could be offered instead.
According to this report, the new Fiat 124 Spider and its Abarth variant both have been secretly previewed during a dealer meeting in Las Vegas in the USA earlier this week. Both are expected to go on sale next year in Europe next year.
