The fourth-gen Mazda MX-5-based Fiat 124 Spider that was unveiled at the 2015 LA Auto Show this month will gain a sportier variant Abarth variant next year. The Fiat Abarth 124 Spider was highly rumoured to be powered by a detuned version of the Alfa Romeo 4C’s 237-hp 1.75 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, we at SteeringNews.com, were certain that a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine is likely.
Going with our assumption, a report from Automotive News Europe has confirmed that the Fiat Abarth 124 Spider will be powered by the same 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the regular Fiat 124 Spider. The engine will be tuned for more performance of course. The standard 160 hp 1.4-litre engine should be uprated to around 200 hp for the Abarth variant.
Along with a powerful engine, the sportier variant would come with some visual tweaks as well. Distinctive colour scheme, lightweight wheels, grippier tyres and aerodynamic modifications are likely to be seen on the outside.
The Fiat Abarth 124 Spider could be introduced at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Fiat 124 Spider goes on sale in Europe in May, and its Abarth variant should follow by late 2016.
