As expected, Opel has revealed the fifth generation 2016 Opel Astra a few weeks earlier. Currently only the 5-door hatchback model has been revealed but a 3-door coupe and a long-wheelbase estate will follow later on. Underpinned by updated (GM) Delta platform, the new generation Astra is 120-200 kg lighter than the outgoing one. The weight of the bodyshell itself has been reduced by 20% from 357 kg to 280 kg. Chassis related measures such as, strategic usage of high-strength and ultra-high-strength low-weight steels, compact subframes as well as reducing weight of front and rear axle has resulted in reduction of 50 kg.
The fifth-gen model takes inspiration from the Opel Monza concept that was unveiled at the 2013 International Motor Show in Frankfurt. It reflects the evolution of the company’s design philosophy – ‘Sculptural Artistry meets German Precision’. The hatchback’s length has been reduced by almost 5 cm to 4.37 m. The height has been reduced by 2.6 cm to 1.46 m. Thanks to these changes, the drag coefficient is now below 0.30, meaning higher efficiency.
Despite the wheelbase getting shorter by 2 cm, the cabin space has increased. There’s 35 mm more of legroom for the rear passengers. There’s a new generation IntelliLink infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. This will be the brand’s first car to be offered with personal connectivity and service assistant OnStar from its launch. Apart from emergency response and assistance services, OnStar also offers 4G mobile Wi-Fi hotspot which can be used by up to seven devices simultaneously.
An extensive list of safety and assistance features will be offered on the all-new model. Apart from the IntelliLux LED matrix light, this list includes Traffic Sign Assistant, Lane Keep Assist with lane Departure Warning along with Following Distance Indication, Forward Collision Alert with Collision Imminent Braking, cruise control, Advanced Park Assist and Side Blind Spot Alert.
Three engine options will be available at the launch – 95-hp 1.6-litre CDTI four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, 105-hp 1.0-litre ECOTEC turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine and 145-hp 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.
Sales of the 2016 Opel Astra should commence shortly after its world premiere at 2015 International Motor Show in Frankfurt which is to be held from September 17 to 27.
