The currently sold, third-generation Volkswagen Scirocco, has been out there in the market since 2008 and is due for a major update. Built upon the PQ35 platform, the currently sold model comes is offered globally with three engine options – 1.4-litre TSI (petrol), 2.0-litre TSI (petrol) and 2.0-litre TDI (diesel) Transmission choices include 6-speed manual transmission, 6-speed DSG automatic transmission and 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
The fouth-generation Scirocco is reportedly arriving in 2017, as per Inautonews. Although not yet confirmed, it can expected to be based on the MQB platform which currently underpins the company’s latest cars. Engine choices likely to be offered are 1.4-litre TSI petrol, 2.0-litre TSI petrol and 2.0-litre TDI diesel. Of course, these three engines are already offered on the currently sold model but the new ones would be updated with latest technology and be more powerful and eco-friendly. A new 10-speed DSG automatic transmission could also be offered along with the other regular transmission choices.
Even though the car is basically a sports coupe meant for performance enthusiasts, a plug-in hybrid variant shouldn’t be ruled out. If Audi can offer e-tron all-electric version of its R8 supercar to be environment-friendly, then offering a VW-branded sports coupe hatchback with a PHEV setup to go green shouldn’t be a odd either. Supporting this speculation, is the fact that the Volkswagen Group recently said that it will extend PHEV models to the range of most of its vehicles. The group aims at becoming an electrified vehicle leader in the future.
