Hyundai has announced that the combustion engine doing the duty under the hood of the upcoming dedicated hybrid electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle, will be a Kappa 1.6-litre GDI engine. The South Korean automaker unveiled the new compact engine along with a new front-wheel drive 8-speed automatic transmission at its annual International Powertrain Conference.
The first production car featuring the new 1.6-litre engine, likely the Toyota Prius-rivaling hybrid sedan, will arrive in early 2016. It is the company’s first engine that has combination of the Atkinson cycle, cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a long stroke specification (to maximise thermal efficiency.
The 1.6-litre GDI engine features a six-hole laser-drilled GDI injector and high pressure fuel supply system of maximum 200 bar, thus offering clean combustion, improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. It produces 105 PS (77.2 kW/104 hp) and 15. kgf.m (147 Nm) of torque. The hybrid system of the close rival Toyota Prius features a 1.8-litre petrol engine that produces 75 kW (98 PS) and 142 Nm of torque.
The dedicated hybrid vehicle (codename: AE) is said to be unveiled at IEVE 2016 i.e. the 3rd International Electric Vehicle Expo that will be held from 18-24 March in Jeju island in South Korea. Its plug-in hybrid variant should follow later on, probably around the same timeline as the 2017 Toyota Prius PHV.
Coming to the new transmission, it’s called FF 8-speed automatic transmission. The front-wheel drive 8-speed automatic transmission is based on a unique layout, with an additional clutch to the company’s 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s 7.3% more fuel efficient than the 6-speed automatic. It has improved acceleration performance at the low gear range and enhanced NVH at high gear range. The company will pair this transmission to its Lambda, Theta turbo GDI and R family engines in the large and luxury car segments. Thus, the second generation 2017 Hyundai Equus arriving next year would also feature this transmission.
Complete technical details about the new Kappa 1.6-litre GDI engine and the FF 8-speed automatic transmission are available in the press release embedded below.
