Hyundai’s sister company Kia is planning a new sports car. President & CEO Kia Motors UK and Ireland, Paul Philpott, has said that it will be launched “by the end of the decade”, says a new report from Autocar. The official says that it will use the knowledge gained from developing the GT and Stinger GT4 concepts to realize the project, as per the report.
The GT is a four-door rear-wheel drive luxury coupe concept, while the Stinger GT4 is a 2-door sports coupe concept.
According to the report, the sports car will be developed from the ground up. Mr. Philpott has said that it won’t be based on another Kia and will be “affordable”. It will be sold worldwide to achieve economies of scale in production, he suggested. That said, it will be largely targeted at the North American markets which have a significant demand for sports cars.
Mr. Philpott also confirmed a sub-compact crossover that reportedly has been approved for production, will arrive within two years. “We’ll do it right and be a force to be reckoned with”, he said. Among the company’s other future products that will arrive by 2020 are said to be a four-door luxury coupe based on the GT concept, Optima Estate, and next-gen Sportage, Rio, Cadenza and Picanto.
