As odd as it may sound, McLaren is mulling a shooting brake for its Sports Series range of entry-level models, suggests a report from Drive.com.au. The Sports Series currently comprises two coupes – McLaren 570S and McLaren 540C.
According to the report, the McLaren 570S will get a new variant next year which will debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March – and it could be a shooting brake.
No, McLaren is in no way going to make a Mercedes CLS-Class like four-door coupe wagon. The British automaker is mulling a Ferrari FF-like two-door shooting brake, hinting at a McLaren with four seats. It won’t be a Ferrari FF-rival though, being powered by a 570 hp V8 engine (unconfirmed) which is not in the same performance segment as the former’s 651 hp V12 engine.
Speaking to the Australian publication about the alleged shooting brake, Frank Stephenson, Director of Design at McLaren Automotive, said: “I won’t deny or confirm but it could be an interesting way to go because that segment needs space.”
When questioned about the extra cargo space could be above the engine which would pose a problem when the engine is hot, Mr. Stephenson replied, “Whatever you think are limits, aren’t limits, at least at McLaren.” “Nothing is impossible,” he added.
“It will be a jaw-dropper. It is beautiful.”
It’s target market will be different than the McLaren 570S coupe, indicated Mr. Stephenson.
“It will be a different kind of car for the client to aspire to. So the 570S will attract one type of client and the 570-‘Blank’ will attract a different sort of buyer. You don’t want those overlapping, definitely.”
