The upcoming Mercedes GLS-Class has been spied testing in Stuttgart, Germany by YouTube user DrGumoLunatic. The GLS-Class will be a mere facelift but with a new name, following the brand’s latest nomenclature system.
The ‘S’ added to the name reflects that the vehicle is positioned equivalent to the S-Class. The mid-cycle facelift will bring exterior and interior styling similar to the GLE Coupe. The fully redesigned next generation model is expected to arrive in 2017.
The engine line-up should remain unchanged; only some refinements and/or power upgrade can be expected. The currently offered engine options on the GL-Class includes: 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine 4.7-litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine 5.5-litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine.
The first three engines come mated to a 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, while the most powerful 5.5-litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine on the GL 63 AMG variant comes mated to the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
The facelift could also come with the new 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission that debuted on the E-Class in 2013.
According to a report released in May, the GLS-Class will become available for pre-order in select markets from 04 November 2015 and start arriving in the dealerships in Q1 2016. This indicates that it would debut at the 2015 International Motor Show in Frankfurt (IAA) in September.
