The Mercedes R-Class that was introduced more than a decade back failed to convince the market like it was expected to. The lukewarm response was maybe due to the almost non-existent segment and it was axed in 2013 in major markets including the U.S. and Europe. The luxury MPV is now set for a revival, as per a new report from CarAdvice.
Speaking to the publication at the launch of the GLE and GLE Coupe in Europe, Wolf-Dieter Kurz, Vice President Product Group SUVs and Sports Cars of the company, strongly hinted that the company is interested in pushing the R-Class to the second generation. He said that an interesting segment for the future is an on-road vehicle, very roomy (like crossovers/SUVs), but not station wagon. This points directly at luxury MPVs like the R-Class or to name a successful one – the Renault Espace.
The company may also aggressively expand its crossover/SUV line-up. Mr. Kurz says that this segment will be the one with the most derivatives in the future. Moreover, a possibility is that the next-gen R-Class, if it is launched, could be positioned as a crossover MPV. Renault did this with launch of the fifth generation Espace at the Paris Motor Show last year.
