Mercedes has revealed the S-Class Cabriolet ahead of its world debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The cabriolet version will have the distinction of being the first four-seater convertible S-Class from the brand since 1971.
The new S-Class Cabriolet will feature an exceptionally rigid construction while keeping the weight as low as possible. The luggage compartment bulkhead is made of aluminium and magnesium while the rear floor is made of aluminium which helps in a lower bodyshell weight similar to the S-Class Coupe. It will feature the use of pyrotechnic initiation behind the rear head restraints for roll-over protection for the first time; additionally the roll-bars will be moved into position by a gas generator.
The cabriolet will employ a multilayer soft top which can be operated with a switch on the dashboard or from the outside using the remote. Opening and closing the roof will take around 20 seconds and can be operated at speeds up to 37.2 mph (60 km/h). The soft top will be available in dark blue, black, beige and dark red colour schemes.
With the uber luxurious interior, the company aims to create an open air lounge with a ‘yacht like atmosphere’. To further enhance individualisation, six interior colour concepts will be offered with 3-leather options. It will also feature THERMOTRONIC intelligent climate control which is designed to offer maximum comfort and convenience to passengers.
The cabriolet will be offered with an enhanced automatic wind protection system AIRCAP, neck-level heating system AIRSCARF along with Warmth Comfort Package with heated armrests and rear seat heating. It can also be specified with AIR-Balance package which offers a variety of fragrances and ionisation options along with added air purification by activated charcoal filter for the cabin. A new fragrance Pacific Mood will exclusively be available for the cabriolet.
The S-500 Cabriolet will be powered by a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 that develops 455 hp (335 kW) and 700 Nm of torque. It will be mated to a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The cabriolet version will be also offered with a high performance AMG variant S 63 4MATIC that will be powered by a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 585 hp (430 kW) of power and 900 Nm of torque. The S 63 Cabriolet can reach 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).
The Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet with be unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA), go on sale in first markets in December, with deliveries beginning in spring 2016.
