The 2016 Mercedes S-Class sedan (MY2017 for North America) will bring a crucial update with it. A fresh report by Mercedes Benz Passion says that the updated full-size luxury saloon will go into production and launch in Germany probably in October this year. The update will finally add the 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission to the S-Class sedan range, as per the report.
The company introduced this highly efficient 9-speed automatic transmission in July 2013 and launched it first on the E350 BlueTEC in September 2013 in Germany. It was later on introduced on other models of the E-Class range, and then on the CLS-Class Coupe, CLS Shooting Brake and the S-Class Coupe. Some of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class (S500, S500 4MATIC and S550) also feature this transmission but their availability is limited to select markets like Germany, Netherlands, Luxembourg and a few others.
The advanced automatic transmission is suitable for rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive drivetrains. Both petrol and diesel, as well as hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains can be matched with it. Once the next generation E-Class debuts this year, more models of the E-Class range can be expected with this transmission.
Starting in 2016, the 9G-Tronic transmission which has been produced and assembled since its introduction at the Untertürkheim parent plant, will be assembled at the company’s new plant in Sebes, Romania as well, closes the report.
