Mercedes is working on a Tesla-rivaling EV concept

September 6, 2015

Mercedes has confirmed a Tesla-rivaling all-electric luxury car for production, as per a report from Automotive News. In an interview with the publication, Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, said that the company plans to begin selling an all-electric car with a range of 400-500 km within a few years, possibly in 2018.

The forthcoming battery-powered Mercedes won’t be similar to the electric variant of the Mercedes B-Class, Mercedes-AMG SLS or Smart ForTwo, Mr. Weber suggested.

“It’s something different,” Mr. Weber said. “It’s unique; it’s emotional. Wait and see.”

The Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive has a maximum range of around 200 km, while the Mercedes-AMG SLS Electric Drive has a maximum range of 250 km. But the forthcoming electric vehicle would have at-least double the maximum range of the Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive, and so, it can be expected to be larger in size as it will require more space for the appropriate battery pack.

The future electric car can be expected to be a sports saloon with a fastback design like the Tesla Model S. Arch-rival BMW is also rumoured to be going for a similar approach with its next BMW i sub-brand model. The design of the forthcoming all-electric Mercedes could be inspired by the Mercedes Concept IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile) that was unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) this week.
