This is for the first time that one of Germany’s Big Three are going to enter pickup truck segment, and it is the most prestigious – Mercedes Benz. A fresh report from Wall Street Journal says that the three pointed star is working on a new midsize pickup truck. The media company claims to have seen a life-size clay model of the pickup truck. As per the report, the clay model is of a double-cab pickup truck with tapered lines – typical of the brand’s sedans and SUVs, and loading space big enough for any craftsmen’s tools or gears for a family’s weekend outing.
The company did not disclose any other details such as its investment or the expected launch date of the vehicle, but said that it is gearing up for producing the pickup truck in “in large numbers” in various regions around the world within the next five years, says the report.
The pickup truck will most likely sell under the Mercedes-Benz Vans brand. It would be really weird but exciting at the same time, to see one of the world’s most popular luxury automaker which is reknowned for producing extravagant cars like the Maybach and the Pullman, enter the pickup truck segment. The upside of this move for mass automakers like Ford and Toyota would be that the segment will heat up in the European markets, allowing them to cash in from the same.
