Coughing in its eight year-old body, the current-gen Mitsubishi Lancer is eagerly awaiting a major update or a replacement to stay alive in the market. The company has recently expressed multiple times that, as of now, it intends to focus only on profitable segments – crossover and SUVs.
However, a new report from Wards Auto claims that the company is beginning development on an all-new Lancer. According to the report, the Japanese automaker wants to partner with another automaker for the next-gen Lancer, but is low on hopes.
As a backup option, Mitsubishi is designing the vehicle in-house, should the plan not materialize. The company doesn’t want to fall behind in bringing the next-gen model by relying solely on a partner, which would otherwise leave them another year behind in its developments.
Even if a partnership is struck with another automaker, the next Lancer still is 18 months to 2 years away. The current-gen Lancer is not doing so well, reason being its long life cycle. The iconic high-performance Lancer Evolution is already waving goodbye this year with the Final Edition variant.
