Audi presented a new 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder petrol engine at the Vienna Motor Symposium. The new turbocharged direct injection engine is good for 190 hp and 320 Nm of torque and the next-generation Audi A4 that goes on sale this year, will be the first Audi to be offered with this engine.
Boasting the company’s previous achievement of being the trendsetter in downsizing, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at Audi AG, says that the next crucial step is “rightsizing”.
The engine weighs only about 140 kg. Developed based on the rightsizing approach, the new engine has fuel consumption like that of a downsized engine in partial load operation, and high performance like large-displacement engines in heavy load operation. The result – optimal fuel efficiency and performance regardless of the rpm range. Audi promises a fuel economy figure of more than 20 km/l in the NEDC. The new generation engine will be introduced in other model series later, following the 2016 Audi A4.
The 2016 A4 was partially revealed in leaked images in March this year. It is based on second generation MLB platform and be unveiled at the 2015 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September. Sales of the all-new model will commence by the end of this year or in early 2016. A natural gas version called the ‘A4 g-tron‘ will also be launched later with a very lower CO2 emission figure.
