The North American-spec 2016 Toyota Prius has been spied completely undisguised ahead of its official debut that will reportedly happen on September 8 in Las Vegas, USA. These images, first published by Prius Club Malaysia, could probably be of the all-new Prius being flown to its debut.
As polarizing as the design seemed when we saw the speculative renderings, the actual production-spec design is radical. Especially at the front, the fourth generation Toyota Prius looks distinctively beautiful. The front fascia is completely new and it’s like none-other, neither a Toyota, nor any other car. The silver-colored Prius seen in the image, could be of the base trim level, as it misses out fog lamps and gets a basic alloy wheel design.
What may appear unpleasant to some, could probably be the side profile that is inspired by the Mirai. The rear-end, also inspired by the Mirai, manages to give a striking appeal with LED tail lamps floating from top to bottom. All in all, the fourth generation is a leap forward in terms of the much-needed redesign.
The all-new Toyota Prius (codename: Toyota 690A) will be based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) scalable platform. The new model will reportedly be larger, but will still manage to have its weight reduced by over a 100 kg to 1,280 kg (2,822 lbs).
The hybrid powertrain of the 2016 Toyota Prius, as per the aforementioned report, will comprise a 105 PS (104 hp) 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder petrol engine and a 90 PS (89 hp) electric motor. The hybrid system will have a combined output of around 145-150 PS (143-148 hp). Power will be sent to the front wheels via an eCVT (electronic Continuously Variable Transmission). This combination will offer a fuel economy of 40 km/l (JC08 cycle) on the JDM-spec model.
