The next generation Renault Twingo is already on Renault’s drawing board. The new Twingo due for 2013, will be jointly developed with the third generation Smart Fortwo, thanks to the tie-up between Renault-Nissan and Daimler.

The main characteristic of the upcoming Twingo is that it would utilize the unique rear wheel drive platform of the current Smart Fortwo. There would also be a conventional front wheel driven Twingo. An electric version of the 2013 Renault Twingo and the Smart Fortwo are also being developed. The electric versions of these cars would be launched along with its petrol and diesel siblings.

Renault is also planning to sell the car in two iterations, a 2-seater and a 4-seater. Renault-Nissan announced it would be building the 2- seater at Smart’s Hambach factory in France along with the Fortwo, and the 4-seat Twingo is to be built at Renault’s Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia.

We expect the 4-seat Renault Twingo to share its underpinnings with the next generation Smart Forfour as Daimler had strongly hinted the return of the Forfour in near future. The 2013 Smart Forfour is likely to be built at Renault’s Slovenian plant.

To sum it all up: Renault and Daimler are developing efficient petrol, diesel and electric versions of the next generation Twingo, Fortwo and Forfour based on Smart’s rear wheel drive architecture.
