Rolls Royce crossover prototype (Cullinan)

Rolls-Royce crossover goes in sale in 2018, will retain ‘Cullinan’ name

September 22, 2015

Rolls-Royce is working on a new luxury crossover, as reported in February, under the codename ‘Project Cullinan.’ The company’s first crossover will rival counterparts from Aston Martin (the production DBX Concept) and Bentley (Bentayga).

According to a report from Auto Express, the British luxury brand’s crossover will go on sale in 2018. This was confirmed to the publication at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) by Torsten Muller Otvos, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The report says that Mr. Muller Otvos is confident about the progress being made on the crossover’s development.

The development is already underway, with the company testing the prototype in a shortened Series II Phantom body. The development mule is testing out an all-new all-wheel drive and suspension system. Mr. Muller Otvos hinted that the name ‘Cullinan’ will be carried over to the production version, stating “I love the name”.

Commenting on Bentley’s claims about its Bentayga crossover being the “best SUV in the world”, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ CEO said: “The Bentley SUV is clearly the number two; Rolls-Royce is the best in the world and will be when our model arrives. We will bring a great new car, and an authentic Rolls Royce into the market.”
