Nissan has commenced the production of the new-generation X-trail SUV at its St. Petersburg plant in Russia. This marked the launch of the second phase of the company’s factory in St. Petersburg through which the annual production capacity increased from 50,000 to 100,000 cars. Nissan produces cars in Russia in four cities: St. Petersburg, Togliatti, Izhevsk and Moscow.
Currently the localization level is at 39%. The company further plans to expand its production in order to accelerate the localization process to bring it up to the level of 45%. Despite the decline in consumer demand of vehicles in 2014 nationally, the Japanese automaker still anticipates the market to be promising and will continue with its expansion and localization plans.
