Scion iA, the brand’s first sedan, has been spied completely undisguised before its official debut. According to Autoguide, the new car was being filmed for a commercial in California. The spy shot clearly shows that the subcompact sedan is a rebadged 2015 Mazda2 Sedan. The overall structure appears to be the same as the 2015 Mazda2 Sedan.
The front-end however, is distinctive with unique bumper, upper grille and airdam. The upper grille and the air dam grille are typically Scion-ish, with the former being very sleek and barely visible, and the latter being trapezoidal in shape, with chrome edges. The headlamp is distinctive but the tail lamp is apparently the same as that of the Mazda2 sedan, with possible tweaks in the clusters. The spyshot can be compared with the 2015 Mazda2 Sedan’s images attached in the gallery at the end of the story.
The 2015 Mazda2 Sedan is powered by a 1.3-liter SkyActiv-G petrol engine that produces 93 PS (92 hp) and 123 Nm of torque. Will the a 92 hp sedan appeal the car buyers in the North American? Maybe, maybe not. The engine is coupled to a 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic transmission. A 105-hp SKYACTIV-D engine is also offered on the subcompact sedan, but this engine most likely won’t make it to the North American market.
Like the Mazda2, the Scion iA will also be based on the SKYACTIV platform and be offered with SKYACTIV gasoline engine. The subcompact sedan will be unveiled at the 2015 New York International Auto Show in April.
