The Toyota FT-86 is a car that is jointly being developed by Toyota and Subaru and is scheduled for a 2012 debut. The vehicle uses many design cues from the earlier FT-HS concept.
We have details of this future sportscar – it will host a light front engine, rear drive, 4 or 5 seat coupe, with a new 2 liter Toyota-Subaru “D-4S” Boxer engine.
The FT-86 sits on a modified Subaru Impreza platform with 101.2-inch wheelbase, with length, width, and height measuring 163.8, 69.3, and 49.6 inches, respectively. A base price in the USD $20,000 range is expected when the car hits the market with the Subaru version following shortly afterwards. Jim Lentz, COO and President of Toyota Motor Sales USA confirmed that the production version of the FT-86 will be sold in America in the future.
The Toyota and Subaru versions will be closely matched except for the lights and hood. A 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine will be coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission and you needn’t be an expert to guess a semi-automatic could also join the line-up a little later. The car is expected to hit Japanese showrooms in 2012.
