Suzuki has announced that production version of its iK-2 concept that premiered at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March will be unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) in September as the Suzuki Baleno. The name has had a long history with the company in markets including Europe, Asia and Australia.
The company has released a teaser image and video of the compact hatchback, and both reveal that the production version is very European in terms of design, styling and proportions – missing the much-revered sportiness that one would expect from a Suzuki, consider the Swift for instance.
“The Baleno harmoniously combines stylish design, spacious interior and new technologies”, Suzuki says. The headlamps are resemble the Swift, but apart from that, the design is completely a new, contemporary one. The 2016 Baleno is built around a new generation platform.
The new VW Polo-rival’s engine options will include a newly developed 1.0-litre BoosterJet direct injection turbocharged petrol engine. That’s Suzuki’s answer to the VW Polo BlueMotion TSI and the Ford Ecoboost. While announcing the concept in March, Suzuki said that the production model will be available an integrated starter generator and a start-stop system. Expect more details on that to be released in September.
Following the Frankfurt Motor Show debut, the new compact hatchback will go on sale in Europe in 2016, possibly in the first half of the calender year.
